Tangier - Merzouga Desert - Marrakech

Tour duration: 10 days.

Departure from: Tangier.

Arrival in: Marrakech.

Itinerary

On the agreed day and time, we will pick you up from Tangier's airport or port and begin our adventure heading to our first destination: Chefchaouen.

On the way to the blue city, we will enjoy picturesque landscapes and pass through different traditional villages, making several stops. Upon arrival in Chefchaouen, you will have free time to immerse yourself in and get lost in the iconic blue alleys of its old Medina, discovering local crafts and its world-famous views.

Accommodation in Chefchaouen.

The second day will be free for you to explore Chefchaouen in more detail, a city famous for its houses and streets painted in various shades of blue. The city’s Medina and its cobblestone alleys are notable, where you can see looms and other local crafts.

We recommend walking along the city wall to view the Bab El Ain gate, which connects the new part of the city to the southern section of the old Medina. Don’t miss the Mohammed V square and the main square, Uta el Hammam, where you can see the red walls of the Kasbah, dating back to the 15th century. This visit is highly recommended.

Overnight in Chefchaouen.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will continue our adventure towards Fez. Our first stop will be Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Volubilis is an ancient Roman city and one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in northern Africa.

After this visit, we will head towards Meknes, another UNESCO World Heritage city (since 1996), famous for housing the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the 17th-century Sultan of Morocco.

In Meknes, we will enter the Medina to explore its alleys and discover its charm. Besides visiting the Bab el Mansour gate, we will also visit the Jewish Quarter and the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

After exploring this majestic city, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before heading to Fez, where we will check in at our accommodation.

After breakfast, we will discover the imperial city of Fez, known for having the largest Medina in the world and being a cultural hub, home to the oldest university in the world.

Our adventure will begin with an official guide tour inside Fez's Medina, wandering through its alleys, uncovering hidden spots, and delving into the city’s history. The Medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to globally significant artisan crafts, with the city being a key center for leather and pottery production.

The first point of interest will be the majestic gate of the Royal Palace, followed by the Jewish Quarter, which dates back to the 14th century. We will continue to important historical and cultural sites, such as the Tannery and the famous University of Qarawiyyin, the oldest university in the world.

After immersing ourselves in the history and culture of Fez, we will take a break for lunch at a traditional Moroccan restaurant. The tour will end with a visit to a viewpoint, where we can capture the unforgettable panoramic view of the Medina of Fez.

Overnight in Fez.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will say goodbye to Fez and begin our journey to the desert. We will pass through several towns, including Ifrane ("the Switzerland of Morocco") and Azrou, where we will discover the Middle Atlas and the cedar forest (home to thousand-year-old trees and Gibraltar monkeys).

We will continue our journey through Midelt, the city of apples, where we will have lunch. Then, we will pass through cities like Errachidia (with its majestic palm valley, the Ziz Valley), Erfoud (famous for fossil discoveries), and Rissani (the city of dates, with the region’s main market).

Finally, we will reach the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, Merzouga Desert, home to the highest dunes in northern Africa.

From here, we will embark on a camel trek through the desert, stopping to witness the unforgettable sunset. After this, we will head deeper into the heart of the desert, where we will arrive at the camp for the night.

At the camp, we will be welcomed with traditional tea and enjoy a delicious Berber dinner in the vast desert. After dinner, we will experience an unforgettable night with a drumming performance. We’ll sit around the fire and learn to play traditional Berber instruments, living a unique experience under one of Africa’s most spectacular starry skies.

We will wake up early to witness the sunrise in the heart of the desert (this activity is optional, but highly recommended!). After breakfast, we will begin a 4x4 tour to explore the area in more detail.  We will cross the desert dunes in true Dakar style, venturing into its heart and living a unique experience. We will also visit a nomadic settlement, where we can talk to the locals and learn about their customs and lifestyle. We will continue to "Mifis," an old French mining and military area, where we can see the remains of mines and constructions. From here, we can view the border with Algeria, defined by a mountain wall on the horizon.

Next, we will visit a viewpoint to admire the vastness of the desert and end with a visit to Khamlia, a village originally from Mali. Here, we will enjoy traditional tea while listening to a concert of Gnawa music (with traditional dress, instruments, and dances).

We will have lunch at a restaurant in Khamlia, where we can try local dishes like Berber pizza. After lunch, we will head back to our accommodation to rest.

The afternoon is free for further desert activities (availability on request). You can also enjoy a walk in the dunes, explore the area more deeply, or enjoy the sunset.

Dinner and accommodation in Merzouga.

After breakfast, we will head to Rissani, also known as Sijilmassa, where we will visit the traditional market. Rissani is a key city in the region, serving as a hub for fresh produce and various crafts, making it one of the oldest and largest markets in the region.

After this visit, we will continue our journey to the Dades Valley, passing through several Berber villages (or Tamazight-speaking), such as Erfoud and Tinghir, until we reach the stunning Todra Gorges (where, weather permitting, we will have the chance to explore).

We will end our day in Dades, where we will have dinner and stay overnight.

After breakfast, we will continue our journey along the famous "Thousand Kasbahs Road." We will pass through the Valley of Roses and the town of Skoura, then continue to one of the world’s most famous cities, known as the setting for blockbuster films ("The Jewel of the Nile," "Asterix & Obelix: "Mission Cleopatra," or "Kingdom of Heaven"), and also the gateway to the desert: Ouarzazate. The name of the city comes from the Berber language and means "without noise."

We will visit historical landmarks like the Taurirt Kasbah and the Atlas Film Studios.

Next, we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified settlement surrounded by a large wall, known for being the backdrop of films and series like "Game of Thrones," "Gladiator," and "Prince of Persia." We will stop for lunch in this magical place.

We will continue our journey over the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the highest mountain pass in the country, Tizi n’Tichka, which reaches 2,260 meters, and head towards Marrakech, where we will head straight to our accommodation.

After a revitalizing breakfast at the hotel, we will take a guided tour of Marrakech. On the tour, we will explore the streets of the red city, discovering its essence and most famous landmarks, such as the Koutoubia Mosque (a 13th-century building, sister to the Giralda in Seville and considered the spiritual center of Marrakech), the Saadian Tombs (dating back to the 16th century, with a notable Carrara marble dome), and the Bahia Palace (from the 16th century, showcasing aristocratic Muslim medieval life, with its cedar wood ceiling in the ambassadors’ hall).

We will then walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of the city. After a lunch break, we will have the opportunity to visit the Majorelle Gardens and Menara Gardens.

The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to wander through the streets, explore the Souk, and enjoy a typical fresh juice or tea in the Jemaa el-Fnaa square or one of its famous terraces while watching the sunset.
